Description of proposed works:

Installation of DDA-compliant handrails to existing stairways including associated works to the tactile pavings, anti-slip nosings risers and treads to the Platform 1, 2, 3 and 4, booking hall to overbridge, front forecourt footpath to overbridge, and rear ( downside) footpath to overbridge.

Reason for objection:

On the basis of the information submitted with the application, it does not appear that the proposed additional handrail would protect or enhance the character and appearance of the listed building and it will detract from the simplicity and elegance of the existing handrail. Effectively there will be an additional yellow tubular steel railing affixed to the wall and it will be placed above and below the existing elegant and simple wooden rail and presumably projecting slightly further from the wall to be clear of the existing handrail.

We question whether the application of DDA to heritage or listed buildings should require alterations to listed buildings which materially detract from their appearance and character.
